It's going to be a wild ride from the origins of copyright law to the modern day. This talk will examine the basic tension between the free expressions of ideas and the need to make a living while expressing. And it will conclude by covering some specifics about SOPA and Protect-IP, how they effect you and what you can do as an individual.

David e. Bell - A photographer, visual story teller, and engineer with over 30 years of experience. His experience includes the development of specialized HDR and panoramic techniques, visual effects workflow, and various production roles in film and television. Currently he is working with his son Shane of the scanning, restoration, and completion of an unfinished film shot on 16mm film. As always interested in that space where technical and artistic challenges overlap.

Audrey Ewell, Aaron Aites and others

Filmmakers/producers Audrey Ewell and Aaron Aites along representatives of the collaboration will present their work in progress. This collaborative film represents the work of over 60 filmmakers to document the OWS events this past fall. They are seeking funding via this Kickstarter page and Mopictive is proud to encourage their efforts.

We will have about 30 minutes of clips followed by a panel discussion with open Q&A from the audience.

From the President's Even More-Messy Desk

MoPictive Friends,

We're moving our April 27 meeting to the SLC Conference Center, 752 7th Avenue, 16th Floor. This venue will also allow us to feed you, hence our $5 admission to help offset the cost of the event space and the refreshments.

Last month we took a look at the Panasonic AF-100 camera. In our continuing program on large sensor cameras, we started with several sessions on using DSLR's, continued with the Panasonic AF-100 and this month we will have a close up look at the Sony PMW F-3. Ron Yoshida owns and rents several of these cameras and he will answer your questions, show footage and generally do the hardware thing with us.

Our featured speaker of the evening is Timur Civan. You will find is bio below. As a DP, Timur owns and shoots a Canon 5D, a Red and a Sony F-3. He will be sharing the perspective of a DP on how to choose a camera for a specific shoot. In the process, Timur will show us clips from his documentary, commercial and cinematic accomplishments.

The rest of our evening will be evolving dynamically. It all depends upon what is announced at NAB, what will be relevant to our group, and who we will be able to find to present to us. In any event, NAB 2011 promises some exciting product introductions and workflow innovations. We'll just have to wait.

I'll announce a final agenda before the meeting.

The Sony PMW F-3

Imagine a Super35 sensor camera with a PL lens mount and third party mounts to use virtually any lens. Imagine a camera so low in noise that you can shoot ISO 6400 with barely any noise. And imagine a camera with 3G SDI, dual link SDI and an option for S-Log and 4:4:4 output to HDCAM SR. Ron Yoshida will show us this camera suitable for your high end productions or even as a B camera for shoots with the highest end gear. It might be out of some our price range at a street price of $13,300 body only ($18,950 with 3 Sony PL primes) but rental is often the way to go on gear such as this. Ron Yoshida shoots and rents his fleet of F-3's and will have a show and tell.

Choosing the Right Camera For the Job

Timur Civan is an acclaimed Director of Photography and fine artist. He has the natural ability to take a seemingly impossible, logistically nightmarish photographic demand and turn it into an award-winning piece of art.

In his years of undergrad at New York University he honed his talent for creating visually stimulating art; he left the school with an appreciation for the capacity of the moving picture.

Initially Timur was a showing visual artist. Upon receiving praise for video artistry at several gallery showings in New York and Istanbul, he was offered the opportunity to shoot his first music video. This early display of an eye for the medium led to a series of videos by acclaimed directors and recording artists. This cemented his love of telling a story with the camera. To date has several dozen short films, music videos, corporate videos, commercials and documentaries under his belt. He is currently shooting a feature film.

From the President-Elect's Messy Desk

MoPictive Friends,

This month marks a transition in the 9 year history of Mopictive as Patrick Inhofer completes his term as president and I humbly try to fulfill the mission set forth by our founder Michael Vitti. We owe tremendous gratitude to Patrick for stepping in after Michael's untimely passing. It was no easy task to run a business so based upon deadlines and manage the work of a user group. Patrick achieved that with good humor, kindness and dedication to the group.

I admit to being a technical person, whether in my training/consulting practice, my product review writing niche and even in my shooting/production. As such I tend to forget sometimes that there is such a thing as content.

Mopictive will continue to focus not just on the technical side of our craft but also on the creative and content aspects. We will continue to seek presenters who can make us thing and who can help us develop our skills. But we, your president and board, need one more thing-- you. Volunteer your skills and time. Become part of the leadership team and some day one of you will be assuming the role of president.

For the first meeting at which I will formally preside, we will have invited presenters as always. More about that in the detailed agenda.

But I like to take chances and even at this last minute, I want to take a chance.

We have amazing members with all kinds of diverse skills. Let's start sharing with each other.

For our February meeting, in addition to our invited guests I am asking for up to 5 volunteers who wish to present to the group. Do you have a unique workflow in FCP, AE, PPro, Avid or any related app? Do you have a clip from an on-going project you would like to show and explain your shooting, editing or VFX techniques? Let me hear your proposal. So that we have time to publicize to the group, deadline for submissions is Monday, February 21, 6:00 pm. Our leadership team will select the five most interesting topics. Make it brief and to the point. You've got 10 minutes and then I get the hook. Submit your proposals to me directly via email-- ned***at***mopictive.org

Let's learn from our presenters and learn from each other.

Jay will be showing us the KiPro Mini, a smaller version of AJA's successful KiPro. The KiPro Mini records ProRes directly from your HDMI or SDI camera outputs to CF cards and is now shipping. He will also speak of other developments at AJA including the recent announcement that Avid Media Composer 5.5 will now support the AJA I/O Express both for input and output.

Singular Software - PluralEyes

Anyone who has shot DSLR video knows that the native audio of the DSLR is less than adequate and thus we are back to the future in shooting dual audio like in film days.

PluralEyes was first developed to work with FCP to sync dual audio. The product line has now expanded and even includes a stand-alone app, Dual Eyes. We will have a demo from Singular Software's Bruce Sharpe and will have offer a PluralEyes license in our famous raffle.

Bruce Sharpe holds a PhD in mathematical physics and has been applying that expertise to software development over the past few years. He was literally a rocket scientist but now his interest in audio and video production has led him to establish Singular Software.

MochaPro - Technology Preview
Do you want or need to know how to do:

High-quality stabilization?
Minority Report type special effects?
Track objects onto your video (or make objects disappear entirely), even if you don't have tracking markers?

The Tao Of Color Grading

Fresh off presentations to the Conneticut and Boston FCP User Groups, “The Tao of Color Grading” is back in NYC to present to MoPictive.

Join professinal colorist / finisher and MoPictive President Patrick Inhofer as he takes you through real-world examples of color theory. He puts those theories into practice and gives you new insights into how your tools process your image.

His goal is to give you a framework around which to approach your color grades on any system, not just Final Cut or Color.

The presentation includes:

The biggest lie you'll never see.
How we must combat that lie.
How even the most complex color correction app can be broken down and replicated using basic filter sets in most NLE and composting apps
The advantage of dedicated color grading apps and control surfaces.
An approach toward your color grades that will work on any system, with any filter(s).

About Patrick

Patrick Inhofer is the Owner/Operator of the boutique finishing house Fini.tv and the new color grading training site TaoOfColor.com. He is a colorist and editor with over 21 years experience in broadcast, cable, corporate, and indie post-production. His passion for the industry was renewed with the 2006 release of Final Touch (now Apple’s Color). His Colorist passion combined with his extensive background as an Online/Finishing Editor creates great left-brain/right-brain interaction that he believes is well suited to his temperament and the craft.
